An Attendee’s Guide to February 1st

Texas Conference For Women

First, we just have to acknowledge…

Our amazing sponsors! Their contributions subsidize the cost of the conference and allow us to keep ticket prices uniquely affordable. We could not put on this event without their support, and we encourage you to get to know the companies demonstrating their real commitment to women in the workplace.

Help in Planning Your Day

As you think about what you’d like to get out of the conference day, we encourage you to browse our online agenda as well as download our NEW app, brought to you by Cisco and available on all major platforms. Browse the day’s offerings and save your favorite events to a private, personal schedule. Get realtime alerts and program updates. Use the handy networking feature to facilitate new connections. (If you have last year’s app, please delete it and search “WatermarkConf” for the latest version!)

What to Expect

The Conference is anchored by two powerful keynote sessions – one in the morning and one over lunch; three different hour-long breakout sessions and multiple small business and social media roundtables in the afternoon. But that’s not nearly all!

Enter the Exhibit Hall and you’ll find the Gilead Career Pavilion, the Social Hub, the Dell Technology Pavilion, the Ericsson Community Connection Pavilion and the Women-Owned Business Marketplace. You’re also invited to a wine tasting reception sponsored by Bonterra Organic Vineyards in the Exhibit Hall from 4:00-5:00 pm.

Gilead Career Pavilion

The Gilead Career Pavilion is open all day, 7:30am – 5:00 pm, and is one of our most consistently popular offerings for a reason. You’ll want to bring your current resume for free professional critique, and organize your thoughts in advance for a free one-on-one coaching session with a coach from the International Coach Federation San Francisco Bay Area chapter. In addition, some of our sponsors will be on site recruiting. No advance sign-up is required.

The Social Hub

The Social Hub is the perfect spot to connect and recharge! Visit our photo booth for a souvenir snapshot and to add your face to our “Who’s In?” wall. And do not miss Amanda Healy’s fabulous Social Profile Makeover Workshops, offered from 11am – 4:45pm. Power up at a charging station before you leave.

Ericsson Community Connection Pavilion

Stop by to learn about opportunities to get involved, and to drop off your donations of new and gently-used professional accessories, handbags and jewelry for Dress for Success San Jose (booth #615).

Women-Owned Business Marketplace

Come take advantage of the many opportunities available to entrepreneurs in the Women-Owned Business Marketplace, plus support other women-owned small businesses by shopping the exhibits.

Stop by the QVC+zulily stage to watch live product pitches and realtime expert feedback. Limited walk-up presenter slots will be available in the afternoon. Learn more.

From 3:00 – 4:40 pm, join one of several Small Business Roundtables for an intimate unscripted talk led by an expert facilitator.

Dell Technology Pavilion

Put the Dell Technology Pavilion on your list for the afternoon – there you’ll find digital experts leading small-scale Social Media Roundtables from 3:00 – 4:40. Bring your questions!

While you’re there, stop by the Yahoo! booth for a free headshot. Then unwind with a complimentary massage, courtesy of Dell.

Get Social

Share your highlights from the day at #WatermarkConf and @wtrmrk and follow us on social media to stay in touch on Conference Day and all year long!

Nicole StoryBy Nicole Story, Vice President of Creative, Poo~Pourri

As creative director of Poo~Pourri’s new production company, Number Two Productions, I write and direct our digital video ads. Each gets millions of views, likes and shares on platforms like YouTube and Facebook. In fact, our videos have more than 250 million total views, and counting.

When people learn that I write Poo~Pourri ads, they often ask, “How do you create videos that become viral?” And while there’s no guarantee your ad will go viral, here’s what I’ve learned about creating video ads that are engaging and entertaining enough for people to share. Read More

Does Your Image Match Your Professional Goals?

Anna AkbariMost of us would never send work emails that were full of sloppy mistakes. Yet many of us do the equivalent on a daily basis with our outward appearance. “The way you present yourself is part of how others filter and receive what you’re saying,” says Anna Akbari, a sociologist, image and innovation expert and author of Start Up Your Life: Hustle and Hack Your Way to Happiness. “Someone who is projecting the wrong image can’t communicate effectively.”

In other words, clothes matter—as do shoes, jewelry and hair. And they matter as much for men as they do for women. “Having the right look signals that you know the rules and that you belong,” Akbari explains. “The only difference between men and women is that it’s a lot easier for men to get it right. They don’t have hemlines, cleavage, heel height and everything else to consider.”

To help you put your best foot forward, Akbari, who will be speaking at the 2017 Watermark Conference for Women, offers three simple steps that can vastly improve your image: Read More

Kara Swisher on Taking Risks and Having No Regrets

Kara SwisherIf there’s one thing you notice right off the bat about Kara Swisher, it’s that the executive editor of Recode does not mince words. It could be because she doesn’t have time to run circles around her meaning, but the more she speaks her mind, the more you realize that the tech journalist is simply a straight shooter.

Yet Swisher is as insightful as she is direct, and the combo makes her bore-proof—and a great interviewer to watch in action. See for yourself at the 2017 Watermark Conference for Women, where she’ll be in conversation first with Sheryl Sandberg and then with former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice. Until then, check out what she has learned on her journey from being a corporate employee to startup founder and owner.

Three Beliefs That Are Ruining Your Work-Life Balance

Tiffany DufuThe first eight years of her marriage, Tiffany Dufu had a beautiful home to go along with her brilliant career raising money to advance women and girls. She did most of the work around the house, but being Type A, she was okay with that.

“It was my dirty secret,” says Dufu, now chief leadership officer at Levo, a professional network for Millennials, and a launch team member of Leanin.org. “As a feminist whose life’s work is to raise women to higher levels of leadership and non-traditional roles, I would come home and turn into a Stepford wife, trying to manage everything impeccably.”

But then she had her first baby—and perfection took a backseat to practicality. “I was physically exhausted just getting back to work,” Dufu recalls. It took three years (and a second baby) for her to figure out a new M.O. that kept her focused on what she needed to do and guilt-free for not doing the rest, and another four years (and what she calls a “Tiffany Epiphany”) to realize that a lot of professional women could use what she figured out.

2017 Speakers Share: The Jobs They’ll Never Do Again

Working has its ups and downs, but with some jobs, the only high point is leaving. Still, the negative experience made them tougher and informed their future decisions. Some even say that it taught them something valuable about themselves. To help you get to know a little more about our speakers, we took a page from talent recruiters and asked some of our speakers: What’s a job you’ve had, or a task you’ve had to do for a job, that you never want to do again? Check out their answers.   Read More

We cannot stress enough how important it is to plan ahead for traffic, parking and crowded public transit. We suggest you take public transportation or carpool if at all possible, and allow extra time for travel so you don’t miss anything.

You’ll find directions, parking options, maps and help navigating public transportation on our Travel and Discounts page.
