3 Things You Need to Know About Failure

Jessica LaheyIf the thought of your biggest mistakes or failures makes you want to throw up, you’re certainly not alone. That’s how school teacher Jessica Lahey still feels when talking about the first draft of her New York Times best-selling book.

“My editor said it was unpublishable and wanted to bring in a ghost writer,” says Lahey, who wangled a second chance, and after a lot of hard work, redeemed herself—and her writing. Read More

Startup Savvy: How to Raise Cash on Kickstarter

Ten years ago, Kathy Strahs had at least one thing in common with Oprah Winfrey: Strahs’ panini press, a Christmas present from her sister, was one of her favorite things, too. Home with a new baby, Strahs got busy in the kitchen and started blogging about her recipes for the appliance.

“I really enjoyed the creative process and would stay up late and work through the night,” recalls the former marketer. “I had never been a workaholic before, but for the first time I loved what I was doing and felt invigorated.”

Her aptly named blog, Panini Happy, eventually led to a cookbook on the same topic. When her next idea, The 8×8 Cookbook, wasn’t picked up—“Publishers didn’t think the panini press person could sell books about an 8 x 8 inch pan”—Strahs decided to publish the book herself and start a publishing company, Burnt Cheese Press. Marion Jones Wants You to Learn from Her Mistakes

Most of us will never know the heights—or depths—Marion Jones has traveled. At the peak of her career, the sprinter was going after five Olympic gold medals, making millions from endorsement deals and charming everyone with her irresistible smile. At rock bottom, she was an admitted liar, stripped of her medals and serving six months in prison.

Not to understate things, but she has packed a lot of living in her 41 years. “I suspect it’s made me a bit wiser than most people my age,” says Jones, who staged a short comeback as a professional athlete, playing for the WNBA several years ago. For her, sharing this hard-earned wisdom is the key to making sense of her missteps and redeeming them, and so she mentors girls through an empowerment group she founded as well as travels the country to speak, including this November 2, at the TX Conference for Women.

Here’s what Jones, co-author of On the Right Track: From Olympic Downfall to Finding Forgiveness and the Strength to Overcome and Succeed, wants you to know: Read More

5 Things You Need to Know Before Starting Your Own Business

Planoly is Brandy Pham’s first tech startup, but not her first venture. That’s probably why the app for Instagram users already has almost half a million accounts since launching last year. “I’m still on a learning curve, but I definitely applied what I had figured out the hard way when starting a jewelry line,” says Pham, whose rings and necklaces were available at stores such as Henri Bendel and Anthropologie.

In fact, her app evolved from her jewelry design business. “We had shifted our focus to e-commerce and noticed that sales went way up when I posted on Instagram,” Pham recalls. “It was a lot of work, though, taking photos, editing and captioning them, plotting them out for the week and then posting three times a day—on top of designing the jewelry and arranging for its manufacture.”

Then she had a baby, and just about lost her mind. Her husband, though, thought they could design an app that would help her—and together they realized they had something that other small businesses that marketed their brands on Instagram could also use. Read More
